65: Is the Joy of Copy Club right for me?

Is the Joy of Copy Club right for you?

I’m going to do something a little different today. As you may have heard over the last few episodes, the doors to the Joy of Copy Club are open and welcoming new members.

So in this episode of ill communication, I want to share with you a little bit about why I created the Joy of Copy Club and the kind of businesses who join so that you can find out if it’s the right fit for you!

I saw a BIG gap in the online learning community where business owners get access to three things: custom, hands-on marketing and copywriting guidance, co-working and accountability, or time to work on your copy, and a library of high-level copywriting recipes, writing prompts, and trainings.

And it’s a gap that still exists today.

There’s no other copywriting community that provides the combination of training, customized hot seat coaching, and templates and frameworks to help you write faster, stronger, and more effectively, and I am so excited to share more about it with you today!

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • The diversity of people and businesses in the Joy of Copy Club

  • Why I created this membership and all the goodies we provide inside

  • The types of businesses that join and the ones who get the most out of it

  • How the current members have benefited from the Club

  • Why now is the time to join us in the Joy of Copy Club

I hope you enjoyed hearing from some current Club members about how it has improved their business. If you are a woman in business and you want to struggle less with writing your copy, if you want to lean into and improve your emailing practice, this is an investment that will absolutely pay off for the life of your business.

Honestly, if you want to stop overthinking and get over the self-doubt about how to sell yourself through your emails and sales copy, I promise you the Joy of Copy Club will help you. • [00:00:03] Welcome to ill communication, copywriting tips and sales strategies for small business. I'm your host, Kim Keel. I'm a copy coach, sales strategist, and direct response copywriter. It's my mission to help women leaders and change makers amplify their voices through copy. It's why I'm dishing out all the juicy tips, writing prompts, and sales formulas to help you generate more leads, book more calls, and get more high value clients on repeat. Sounds pretty good. It's time to ditch the overwhelm you might be feeling and find confidence in your copywriting so you can get your message out there and attract more soulmate clients. Let's get started. Hello, hello, welcome to episode 65 of the Ill Communication podcast. Hey, I'm going to do something a little different today. As you may have heard [00:01:00] over the last few episodes, the doors to the Joy of Copy Club are open and welcoming new members. The next cohort starts at the beginning of November, so the doors are open for just a few more days. If you know you want to join, go ahead and pause this episode. Head over to Reel.com Slash Copy Club to get the info to join. And this is the last time I'm going to be promoting it here on the podcast this year. So this is your chance to jump in. But today I want to share with you a little bit about why I created the Joy of Copy Club and the kind of businesses who join.

[00:01:34] I just looked back through my calendar, and this month marks the two year anniversary of the Joy of Copy Club. I launched in October 2021. I launched it because I saw a big gap in the online learning community, where business owners get access to three things custom hands on marketing and copywriting guidance, co-working and accountability. Time to work on your copy, and [00:02:00] a library of high level copywriting recipes, prompts, and trainings. It's a gap that still exists today. There is simply no other copywriting community that provides the combination of training, customized hot seat coaching, templates, frameworks, and coaching to help you write faster, stronger, and more effectively. And in the two years of offering this program, dozens of different business owners have joined for one, two, or even three rounds of the club. So I want to share a little bit about the types of businesses who join, and the ones who seem to get the most success out of it. In total, I've welcomed 24 different business owners into the program, including stylists, graphic designers, photographers, business coaches, profit first professionals, marketing consultants, leadership consultants, therapists, fitness and pelvic floor coach, a nonprofit organizations [00:03:00] and a lingerie designer who sells her sexy products direct to consumer. This diversity of businesses has been one of the most exciting and fulfilling aspects of the Joy of Copy Club, and the fact that our community is so small and intimate, you really get a chance to know the other members in the club with you.

[00:03:22] It's also shown me that the Joy of copy method works for all kinds of different businesses, as long as they have an online presence and use email for communication and marketing. Now, typically people join the Joy of Copy Club after they've been in business for a year or more. So as long as you have a business and an understanding of your offers and your audience, if you've sold your offers or products to a few clients, it is the right time to join. Some people join because they have a specific goal, like they want to fully update their website. So they use the web copy templates and tutorials and [00:04:00] the co-writing sessions to plug away at their web copy. Others simply want to become more consistent in emailing their lists. They want some inspiration and prompts to help them quickly create content that resonates with their audience. And they love the monthly writing prompts and the blocked time to write their weekly emails. But in general, I would say most members join because they know they could be better at asking for the sale. Now I am a direct response copywriter. I have studied and trained about sales and persuasion through my couple of decades in the nonprofit sector, and over the last five years in the online business space. I've written several multiple five and six figure campaigns for clients, and I can show you how to artfully and elegantly create calls to action in your emails and on your website so you generate more sales.

[00:04:58] Club members generally [00:05:00] see a boost in open rates and engagement rates on their emails, because it's a really big focus of the work we do inside the club. One of my business coach members shared that the techniques and practice she got from the Joy of Copy Club helped her boost her open rates from around the average, which is about 20% to over 40 to 50%. And that trend has continued months after she concluded her membership. Some members will work on a single email during one of our copy Club sessions to promote an offer. They'll send it and they'll get an immediate sale or two. Now I can hear you thinking like only 1 or 2 sales. That's barely anything. But in the case of these members, one is a spiritual business coach and the other is a premium photographer. Their offers are worth 2 to $3000 each. These people are not selling low ticket items, so if one email creates a sale [00:06:00] worth $3,000, you'll see an immediate ROI from your investment in the copy club. And it's why I think so many people do renew their membership even after the initial term. And so I want you to hear from a couple of members.

[00:06:14] I want you to hear from a returning member, Sandra. Now, Sandra's business is quite different than most of the businesses who join the Joy of Copy Club. Sandra designs sexy lingerie and bodywear through her business, Onyx Bodywear. It's a product based direct to consumer brand and business. It's a little out of the box. In addition to running the business, making the designs, and sewing the pieces, Sandra is a mum to three busy boys who play hockey. Now, if you're a Canadian mom, you know that having any kid in hockey is a tremendous time commitment and she has three in hockey, or at least I think all three are in hockey. But anyway, it doesn't matter. She's the one of the busiest women I know, and she can only work on her business during the few [00:07:00] hours her kids are at school. So she joined Copy Club to block the time in her calendar to create a schedule and accountability, to work on writing her newsletters and updating her website copy. She also loves all of the mini master classes and tutorials that I share inside the copy club, because it's all in one place. She's not scrambling around the internet looking for help to write a certain type of copy. But as I said, she primarily joined the club to get help with writing her newsletter. I want you to hear from Sandi what her experience was inside the copy club.

[00:07:38] I live copy club. It is a weekly session I really look forward to. As a small business owner, I have been able to create all kinds of content using my voice on everything from my social media posts to enhancing my website content, and it's been especially useful for my email [00:08:00] newsletter. And not only do I get work completed, which is a big plus because of the structure of the session, I get really useful and insightful real time editing. Great feedback from like minded participants. So it's just been an amazing opportunity for me to get creative and business juices flowing, not only for writing, but making me think more and differently about what I do. A big success for me, participating in Copy Club has been my email newsletter. I have been able to reach out more consistently with my customers, build my brand also, and get more sale transactions. As a result. My new and improved ratings since participating in Copy Club, so I can't say enough about it.

[00:08:56] And I want you to hear from Megan. Megan also is [00:09:00] a little outside the box of the normal types of entrepreneurs or business coaches who join the Joy of Copy Club. Megan works with a nonprofit agency that helps vulnerable infants and families through difficult situations, like a court order or the foster care system. They specifically focus on infant mental health, which is very niche, and it's also a very serious clinical topic. Here's what Megan says about why she joined.

    [00:09:30] I joined Copy Club.

[00:09:32] Because I do lots of marketing for my company and think that I do pretty well. But when I look at writing number one, I really don't like it. And number two, I've just never felt like it was something I was really strong at. I've seen the emails that Kim sends, and even though I actually hate emails, I open hers more than any other company [00:10:00] because they're so compelling. So I went to my boss and asked if I could use this as my professional development one to really enhance my copywriting skills. So yeah, I really think it was just wanting to excel in an area that I feel like is not my best or my favorite.

[00:10:19] And the thing about Megan is that she has been showing up. She attends almost every single one of the copy coaching sessions to get help with the newsletter she's writing, or the blog posts, or even PDF brochure type copy. That's more common with nonprofit organizations. But what's impressed me most is that she is able to take the monthly writing prompts I share and adapt them for her audience. It's sparking new ways of talking about this serious topic. And sharing stories in a more positive way. It's helping the whole organization think a little more creatively about how they present information to the public or to their audience. And Meghan [00:11:00] shared a story recently about how one of the story driven emails she sent out got several replies, which had never happened before. And not only that, but other experts in the industry are noticing. They're seeing a shift in the messaging and marketing, and it's inspiring them to go back and experience more of the content. This infant mental health association has already created. So here's what Meghan has to share about that again.

[00:11:28] Since I have been in the copy club, we have gotten several replies from partners and other people in the mental health field that have been very impressed that I've been able to take and put mental health and put it in a story form and make it tangible and digestible. Several people have said, we've never seen that done before. This is so. And actually, one lady went on from [00:12:00] there. She was inspired by the email, wants to do some similar things in her organization, and it encouraged her to go check out our podcasts. And she ended up listening to our whole podcast. So truly think the way Kim teaches is amazing, because it's helped me view my marketing efforts in a different light. I was really just sticking to plain and boring, and through storytelling, I've really been able to connect to our audience in a different way and get out our information in a way that feels good and easy for people, especially with infant mental health. It's hard to explain and can be really heavy. So I think working with Kim has really helped me bring some energy to it that we didn't have before.

[00:12:57] I love it. You know, when I talk [00:13:00] to some of my business peers and coaches about the Joy of Copy Club, I say, and I truly believe that it is one of the best communities and mentoring programs on the internet. It's an all in one investment that helps women business owners discover how to write sales copy in your own voice, how to become more consistent with your emailing, and how to drive more sales and more impact through your business. So my friend, if you are a woman in business and you want to struggle less with writing your copy, if you want to lean into and improve your emailing practice, this is an investment that will absolutely pay off for the life of your business. Honestly, if you want to stop overthinking and get over the self-doubt about how to sell yourself through your emails and sales copy, I promise you the Joy of Copy Club will help you.
