  • [00:00:03] Welcome to Ill Communication, Copywriting, Tips and sales strategies for small Business. I'm your host, Kim Keel. I'm a copy coach, sales strategist and direct response copywriter. It's my mission to help women leaders and change makers amplify their voices through copy. It's why I'm dishing out all the juicy tips, writing prompts and sales formulas to help you generate more leads, book more calls, and get more high value clients on repeat. Sounds pretty good. It's time to ditch the overwhelm you might be feeling and find confidence in your copywriting so you can get your message out there and attract more soulmate clients. Let's get started. It breaks my heart every time I hear a woman business owner say, I just don't have the time to write sales copy, or [00:01:00] I just need more time to sit down, come up with ideas, and force myself to write. Today I'm going to dig into this common sentiment and give you some tips for how to overcome it. Hey there. Welcome to episode 44 of the Ill Communication podcast. Today I'm busting a big myth women have about writing sales. Copy that. We don't have time. We can't find the time or we think we don't have the time. So in this short episode, I'm going to share what's actually behind the argument. And at the very end of the episode, I'm sharing a bonus writing prompt you can use this week that's going to help you quickly and easily write sales copy.

[00:01:39] That still sounds like you so often. I hear from the Gen Xers in my audience that finding the time to write copy is the biggest struggle, and I get it. Writing good copy, especially sales copy does take time. We need to spend time researching and analyzing our audience [00:02:00] and ideal customers. We need time to craft offers. Our people want to buy. We need time to develop the messaging and write the copy to sell those offers. And we need time to get the words loaded up into our email providers scheduled onto social media and published on our websites. But I would wager writing copy doesn't take more time than any of the other tasks we do in our businesses from bookkeeping and paying our taxes to creating and delivering our services, from taking free trainings and signing up for low cost courses to attending networking events or engaging in Facebook groups from sending invoices and contracts to sending client thank you gifts. It all takes time, and it's not like any of those tasks are always super fun and enjoyable either. But we make time to do our bookkeeping, send invoices, or attend the free webinars. But when it comes to writing copy and [00:03:00] especially sales and conversion copy, we just don't have the time. And honestly, I don't believe time is what's standing in the way.

[00:03:10] It's confidence. It's overthinking and second guessing. It's perfectionism. You see, Gen X women have a lot of life and career experience. We have a wealth of knowledge and some of us have multiple degrees or have worked in multiple careers. And this overabundance of ideas and knowledge often leads us to overcomplicate and overthink our strategy, messaging and copy. Not only that, but a lot of people socialized as women hold ourselves back because we want it to be perfect. We think it has to be perfect. We're afraid of someone calling us out for something that's incorrect or imperfect. And so we sit on our ideas. We hold our creativity and authority and expertise back, or we outsource it entirely to someone [00:04:00] who doesn't even really get us. We don't put ourselves out there because we worry we won't be seen as perfect. And I can relate because this has been a huge hurdle for me in my own business. I was in business as a copywriter for almost two years before I started growing my email list and sending emails regularly. It was another two years before I had the confidence to launch this podcast as a way to grow my authority and create evergreen content. When it comes to sales, selling and writing sales copy, we really second guess ourselves because we've seen such horrible examples in the media and online marketplace.

[00:04:41] We do not want to be associated with anything that could make us sound like a douchey sales or marketing guru. But what ends up happening is we have a brilliant idea, but then we spin our wheels second guessing ourselves and we never get our message out there. It's like [00:05:00] a funny form of marketing inertia. So the way you find more time to write copy is actually more about feeling confident about your own expertise and owning your badassery and being scared to share it, but still doing it anyway. One of the past members inside of Copy Club, her name is Kate. She often said to me, You know what you do here isn't about writing copy. It's not about the words or how to write them. And after I've worked with dozens and dozens of women and a lot of reflection, I'm beginning to understand my own gifts and superpowers. And I know that as a copy coach and a strategist, this is actually what I do. I help you peel off those layers of self-doubt. I provide you the proven frameworks and templates, not to give you the order of the words, but to cut down on overthinking and perfectionism. And I encourage my clients to approach copy [00:06:00] like a fun experiment, to put it out there, see what happens. Because I know that the more you practice pushing send, the easier it gets.

[00:06:07] The more you trust yourself and the less you stall and second guess. And suddenly you find you have more time to write for your business. As a result, you become the best advocate, salesperson and copywriter for your business or brand. And even in the private one on one copywriting services, I deliver. It's not about the copy and the words I write for my clients. It's about how I see your beautiful genius, your gifts, your impact and reflect that back to you through the copy. And it's why I created this podcast. So when you follow one of the sales copy frameworks like Aida in episode five or P4 in episode 13, or when you follow the rule of one or use a writing prompt to write an email, your brain has a little map to follow. It [00:07:00] won't be overwhelmed or second guess these short, actionable tips and strategies create guardrails for your creativity and your brain. And it's when you're operating within these guardrails that your brilliance will shine and your message will be heard. So I want to leave you today with a simple hack to get out of your own way, to put down the perfectionism and stop second guessing to create a little copy that's going to deepen the relationship you have with your ideal clients and invite them to work with you. It's a writing prompt that's going to help you tap into your own voice, your own ideas, and elegantly sell your services to your ideal client.

[00:07:42] The writing prompt is it breaks my heart when I see blank doing blank, so it breaks my heart when I see the clients you serve doing something that's sabotaging their success. This prompt works because your readers or listeners [00:08:00] will be curious about what's breaking your heart, so they'll stick around to hear more. Write about what breaks your heart, about your why. Highlight the misconceptions and myths people have that are holding them back from the success they deserve or the solution they desire, and then elegantly end with a subtle or a not so subtle call to action. Say something like That's why I do the work I do to help solve this problem, Click here to book a call so I can help you with this too. Get out of your own way. Allow people to hear from you and then they'll want to work with you. And speaking [00:09:00] of working with you, I want to let you know that in a couple of weeks I'll be opening the doors to welcome new members to the Joy of Copy Club.
